Camp Week 1: Training and Geriatrics
What a week!
My first week working at Camp Arc Spencer. Let me tell you, it was crazy.
First of all I arrived. Other staff members see me and introduce themselves. I introduced myself back. Let's see, there are six other male staff, and a bunch of female staff.
So, we did a lot on unloading on Saturday, and some B.S.ing. Then, this one girl, named Nicole Martin, who's head of the ladies, took me and the other newcomers on a cart tour of the camp. We saw all the main points of camp, during that ride.
Then, because of the nice weather, we decided to to pool procedures that day. The two lifeguard/men's leaders, Aaron Grivna, and Justin Pickens, led that, and gave us the swim test, which was only half as much swimming as the Boy Scout swimming test I took years before. piece of cake! Then we did rescuing techniques that same day. Aaron demonstraded on a girl named CHristen Leahy. I then, practiced on one girl, named Jess Jack. But I think I nearly drowned her, in doing so.
Oops!
Since there were only six rooms, and seven men, I had to share. This one guy named Mitch Carnethin was good enough to let me share with him. After we were done loading for the night, we gathered around to play cards. But I took another guy named Leshawn Byrd to Wal-Mart for some supplies.
Sunday, we did a lot of training stuff. Tips on lifting, supervising, troubled behavior, activities, cards, diatary restrictions. medicine procedures, etc. We also did a lost camper drill. I was assigned to check the fields near the train tracks with this other guy named Jake Feits. Then we had a cookout at this wooded cabin area named Ryanwood. I think I ate five hot dogs there.
Monday, I had a nice embaressment. At lunch, the older staff, pretended to be actual campers at their worst. Jake and Jess got me really bad. Later on, I was assured that meals would never be as extreme as they made it. Then at around 4:00, campers showed up. This week was geriatric week, so they were older campers. So far so good. then at bedtime, I got a little freaked out, when I saw a camper fight with Aaron about going to bed. this camper was hitting him and screaming.
Oh, boy!
Tuesday was nice. I was a Valley this week. That means I work with the lowest functiong campers. Mountains are the highest, and Hills are in the middle. But we did music and arts and crafts. The theme is safaris, so the crafts were jungle picture frames, notebooks, masks, and other stuff.
That afternoon, Mitch, Jess, Christin and I went swimming with some of the campers. It was fun, even though it rained. Then it really rained. By the next morning, the place was nearly flooded. Wednesday night, was bad lick for Justin. At the dance he fell down, while holding cookies. If he dropped the cookies, he could have saved himself, but he held onto them. I believe that he broke his back in the fall. Then Thursday, I went swimming again, and played "Water Cops and Robbers" with the campers. I was the robber and they were the cops.
Finally, we had a closing campfire. I sang an old Boy Scout favorite. "Hawaian Punch", a parody of "The Brady Bunch". And Friday the campers went home.
What a week! Eight more coming
